A significant security breach rattled the New Delhi airport just a day after the Republic Day celebrations, highlighting lapses in vigilance despite heightened security measures. An unidentified individual illegally entered the airport premises and was spotted roaming around the airfield by an Air India pilot.
The breach was promptly reported to the air traffic controllers (ATC) by the vigilant pilot as his aircraft taxied to the parking bay around 11:30 pm. Swift action was initiated by the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) upon receiving the alert from the ATC. The intruder was swiftly apprehended by CISF personnel and handed over to the local police authorities.
According to senior airport officials, the accused is identified as a drug addict hailing from the Nuh district of Haryana. Delhi Police assured that there was no security lapse on their part and emphasised that airport security falls under the jurisdiction of CISF and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
Following the incident, the accused was presented before a Delhi court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody for further investigation. Delhi Police officials reiterated that initial inquiries suggest the individual’s involvement in drug abuse.
Airport authorities, as reported by news agency ANI, have underscored the gravity of the breach, categorising it as a “massive security breach.” Extensive measures are being implemented to address the incident with utmost seriousness.
In a related development, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have taken a stern stance against safety violations at airports and onboard flights. Recent fines imposed on Mumbai Airport and IndiGo airline amounting to ₹90 lakh and ₹1.2 crore, respectively, underscore the authorities’ commitment to ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
Additionally, stringent actions are being taken against hoax bomb threat calls directed at airports, with the perpetrators facing severe penalties under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining robust security measures at crucial transportation hubs, necessitating constant vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard public safety and security.
