In the wake of recent fire incidents in Hyderabad’s Abids Market and a temple in Kasargod, Kerala, citizens across Goa are calling on authorities to strengthen fire safety measures and increase public awareness. Disturbing footage from these incidents has amplified concerns over the lack of adequate fire safety protocols, pushing both citizens and community leaders to demand action.

Social activist Prabhav Naik, speaking to reporters, emphasised the pressing need for preventive strategies, specifically tagging the District Collectors of Goa, who also lead the State Disaster Management Cell. “I am fully aware of the absence of proper firefighting equipment in and around Margao Municipal Market. The situation is no better in other markets across Goa. It is now in the hands of the people to prioritise their safety,” he stated.

Naik further highlighted gaps within Goa’s Fire and Emergency Services and underscored the limitations of the State Disaster Management Authority in effectively responding to fire emergencies. “Given the recent fire incidents at Abids Market in Hyderabad and at a temple in Kerala, we must all be worried. It is my duty to alert the citizens,” he added.

In addition to advocating for governmental reforms, Naik urged the public to exercise caution with firecrackers and other potential fire hazards, especially with Diwali celebrations approaching. Representing his group, Madganvcho Awaaz, he encouraged families to keep safety at the forefront during festivities. “Let us all keep a close watch on our children during Diwali celebrations,” Naik urged.

Citizens are now appealing for a proactive approach that includes stricter fire safety regulations, better emergency response systems, and community-based fire prevention education. The recent incidents have served as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and vigilance in ensuring public safety.
