Seasoned IPS officer brings decades of experience in law enforcement and border security
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajesh Nirwan as the Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) confirmed that Nirwan’s tenure will begin from the day he assumes charge and will continue until further orders.
Seasoned Law Enforcement Leader
A 1992-batch IPS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, Nirwan has a distinguished career in law enforcement and security management. He began his journey as Superintendent of Police (SP), CID (CB), Jaipur, and went on to serve as the police chief in key districts such as Jhalawar, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, and Kota. His extensive experience in managing complex law and order situations has earned him a reputation for effective crisis handling and public security management.
In 2007, Nirwan was promoted to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and served for two years at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he was involved in handling high-profile cases and multi-agency coordination. By 2010, he was elevated to Inspector General (IG) of Police, leading the Ajmer Range until 2012, overseeing law enforcement operations across a vast geographical area.
His experience broadened further when he held senior leadership roles in the Border Security Force (BSF) from 2016 to 2023. As Inspector General (IG) and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), headquartered in New Delhi, Nirwan was responsible for critical border security operations, contributing to safeguarding India’s borders.
Strengthening Aviation Security
Nirwan’s appointment comes at a time when India’s aviation sector is expanding rapidly, bringing new security challenges. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is the country’s premier agency for aviation security, tasked with ensuring passenger safety and the secure functioning of airports and airlines.
Founded in 1978, BCAS implements security protocols in line with international standards, working closely with national and global aviation security organisations. Nirwan’s leadership is expected to bolster BCAS’s ability to address emerging threats and maintain stringent security measures across the country’s airports.
Educational Achievements
Beyond his extensive field experience, Nirwan holds impressive academic qualifications. He is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and has an MBA, equipping him with strong financial and management skills. Additionally, he has earned a Master’s degree in Police Management, providing him with specialised knowledge in strategic leadership and security operations.
