The Rs 90.65 crore project will see video surveillance systems installed at nearly 500 railway stations in a move to improve passenger safety
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a state-owned railway infrastructure company, has been awarded a significant contract by Southern Railway to install and upgrade video surveillance systems across its network. The project, valued at Rs 90.65 crore, is a major step towards enhancing security and monitoring at stations throughout the region.
The contract involves the installation of new Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) at 441 stations, specifically those in the D and E categories, which have previously had limited surveillance. In addition, RVNL will augment existing infrastructure at 43 larger stations, including A1, A, B, and C categories. The initiative is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to modernise its security protocols and improve passenger safety through technology.
RVNL, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, announced that the project is slated for completion within 18 months. The company clarified that the deal with the domestic government entity was a standard business transaction, with no related party interests involved.
Once completed, the VSS will be equipped with modern CCTV cameras and centralised monitoring systems, allowing for real-time surveillance and post-event analysis. This technological upgrade is expected to be a crucial tool for both deterring crime and responding to incidents, significantly boosting security for millions of passengers. The contract adds to RVNL’s expanding portfolio of infrastructure projects, which includes track electrification, station redevelopment, and signaling work.
The announcement was made in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, reinforcing the company’s strong project pipeline and positive outlook for investors.
