Celebrating the 80th National Fire Service Day, an important event took place at the fire force headquarters in St. Inez, Panaji. The purpose was to emphasise fire safety and its role in nation-building. The event was jointly organized by the fire and emergency services along with the Chief Electoral Office of Goa.
Under the national theme “Ensure Fire Safety, contribute towards Nation Building,” Nitiv Raiker, Director of Fire and Emergency Services, shared an insightful overview of the department’s achievements. He proudly announced that in the past year alone, they had responded to 8,000 incidents, saving 194 human lives, 757 animal lives, and property worth 179 crores.
Raiker also mentioned the significance of the day being Martyrs Day, a time to remember the firefighters who lost their lives during the 1994 fire explosion at Victoria Dock in Mumbai port. A total of 71 fire personnel sacrificed their lives protecting people and property.
He further announced the observation of Fire Prevention Week from April 14th to April 20th throughout Goa. Various fire safety programs will be conducted to raise awareness and educate the public on fire safety measures. Raiker urged the people of Goa to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge to handle such emergencies effectively.

Sanjit Rodrigues stressed the importance of personal responsibility in fire safety. He emphasized the need to ensure safety at the individual level, especially concerning domestic gas cylinders, which often contribute to avoidable fire incidents. Rodrigues also highlighted the significance of maintaining proper fire safety measures in buildings to ensure a swift response during emergencies, ultimately preventing loss of life and property damage.
