AICTE & OPPO India Kickedoff Second Phase Of ‘Generation Green’ Campaign

The second phase of the campaign focuses on educating young people about the challenges of managing electronic waste, including discarded wires, mobile phones, chargers, and batteries

The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and OPPO India have officially launched the second phase of their ‘Generation Green’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness about electronic waste (e-waste) management. The campaign kicked off at Ramjas College, University of Delhi, which has been named the first ‘Eco-Conscious Champion Institute’ under this initiative.

As part of the campaign’s initial phase, OPPO India and AICTE focused on promoting green skills among students by offering internships across colleges in India. Over 9,000 students from more than 1,400 institutions applied, with 5,000 students selected. These students are now involved in various sustainability activities, such as awareness sessions, surveys, and events like Green Day celebrations.

The second phase of the campaign focuses on educating young people about the challenges of managing electronic waste, including discarded wires, mobile phones, chargers, and batteries. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of properly disposing of these materials to ensure a sustainable future.

Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairperson of the National Education Technology Forum (NETF), was the Chief Guest at the launch ceremony. Also in attendance were Rakesh Bhardwaj, Head of Public Affairs at OPPO India, and Prof. Ajay Kumar Arora, Principal of Ramjas College, alongside other dignitaries. During the two-day event, students from various campus societies participated in activities to support the campaign, including the Literary, Dance, Music, Photography, Quiz, and Fine Arts societies.

“Responsible e-waste disposal is critical to safeguarding our environment and public health,” said Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe. “Addressing sustainability within the education sector is essential for creating a ripple effect that can influence broader societal change. Initiatives like the ‘Generation Green’ campaign empower the youth to take an active role in addressing this issue.”

In just a month, over 1 lakh students from schools and colleges have pledged to reduce energy use and responsibly manage e-waste, contributing to more sustainable lifestyles. The programme aims to reach 10 lakh students across India by the end of 2024.

“At OPPO India, we are committed to the Net-Zero vision of the Government of India and are leading a national movement towards a sustainable future powered by youth,” said Rakesh Bhardwaj, Head of Public Affairs at OPPO India. “In just a few weeks, we’ve gathered over 1 lakh green pledges, showing the enthusiasm and responsibility young people bring to the campaign.”

The first phase of the campaign saw 5,000 students from over 20 states and 3 Union Territories engaged as “Sustainability Champions.” As the second phase rolls out, these students will focus on promoting responsible e-waste management at colleges across India, encouraging others to adopt sustainable practices.

A report from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) highlighted India’s significant growth in e-waste generation, particularly from screens, computers, and small IT equipment. From 2010 to 2022, India saw a 163% increase in e-waste, underscoring the importance of effective management strategies.

Prof. Ajay Kumar Arora, Principal of Ramjas College, expressed pride in the college’s role in launching the second phase of the campaign. “As an institution deeply committed to sustainability, we continuously strive to integrate eco-friendly practices into our campus culture. This collaboration aligns with our vision of fostering environmental responsibility among the youth.”

In the coming weeks, the e-waste awareness drive will extend to several prominent institutions across India, including St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, Amity University in Jharkhand, Silver Oak University in Ahmedabad, and more. Students and staff will be encouraged to collect and responsibly dispose of e-waste through companies authorized by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Additionally, students will be appointed as Sustainability Interns, serving as Campus Ambassadors for the campaign and promoting sustainable practices.

In line with this movement, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 is expected to introduce a new category focusing on Sustainability Rankings. This category will evaluate institutions based on their environmental sustainability efforts, energy efficiency, and green campus initiatives. The ‘Generation Green’ campaign will play a crucial role in helping institutions enhance their sustainability practices.
