Capture the Flag (CTF) in computer security is a thrilling exercise where participants hunt for hidden text strings known as “flags” in purposely vulnerable programs or websites. CTF Origins and Formats
CTF competitions are a testing ground of an individual’s aptitude in cybersecurity ,designed to test and enhance computer security skills. They first emerged in 1996 at DEF CON, a prominent cybersecurity conference held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. DEF CON hosts a weekend of cybersecurity competitions, with the flagship CTF being a highlight.
Two popular CTF formats are jeopardy and attack-defense. Both formats assess participants’ cybersecurity knowledge but with different objectives.
Jeopardy Format: Teams must tackle challenges from various categories, like cryptography, web exploitation, and reverse engineering, each with different point values.
Attack-Defense Format: Teams defend their own vulnerable computer systems while trying to breach opponents’ systems.
Types of CTF Challenges
