Classified documents from Israeli institutions published on Telegram as cybersecurity defences overwhelmed
Anti-Israel hackers have published extensive amounts of classified data, intensifying Israel’s struggle to contain a series of leaks, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz. The leaks reportedly involve tens of thousands of sensitive documents and emails stolen from Israeli institutions, including the Justice Ministry.
The cyber attacks, which began on October 7, 2023, have targeted various entities, including military and defence contractors, hospitals, and government ministries. The breaches have overwhelmed Israel’s cybersecurity infrastructure, with the true extent of the damage to Israel’s security and economy still uncertain, according to media sources.
Despite significant investment in cybersecurity measures, the scale of the leaks is considered one of the most severe in Israel’s history. The leaked data has been disseminated on platforms like Telegram, complicating efforts by Israeli authorities to contain the breach due to Telegram’s limited moderation policies.
Haaretz reported that Telegram has emerged as a critical platform in the ongoing information warfare, particularly by Hamas against Israel. The Israeli government has struggled to monitor and address the challenges posed by the platform.
In a related development, American commentator Jackson Hinkle reported that the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was detained by French authorities after refusing Israel’s request to censor the leaked content. Durov, who faces up to 20 years in prison, was arrested at an airport outside Paris, reportedly linked to an arrest warrant over Telegram’s moderation policies.
Despite Israel’s attempts to mitigate the damage through legal actions and negotiations with tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta, the hackers have utilised decentralised hosting services and “onion domains,” complicating takedown efforts. This cyber conflict comes in the backdrop of the ongoing war in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the kidnapping of more than 240 people.
