The Delhi government has taken a decisive step to enhance safety measures within its hospitals and medical colleges, particularly concerning the protection of female students. In a recent directive issued by the Health Department, all hospitals and medical colleges under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) have been instructed to ensure the continuous functionality of CCTV cameras installed on their premises.
The circular emphasised the importance of comprehensive CCTV coverage across all relevant areas within medical colleges to bolster the safety and security of female students. Additionally, it mandated the implementation of arrangements for the audio-video recording of viva examinations conducted by male faculties with female students, within a week’s time.
The directive explicitly stated, “Hospitals and Medical Colleges under GNCTD are hereby directed to ensure that all the CCTV cameras installed in the Hospitals/Medical Colleges are functioning all the time and video feeds are stored safely.”
This proactive measure comes in response to a recent incident wherein a female student alleged sexual harassment by a professor during a viva examination at a Delhi medical college in January of this year. By enforcing stringent guidelines regarding CCTV surveillance and recording procedures, the Delhi government aims to create a safer and more secure environment for all individuals within its medical institutions, particularly female students.
