Ruckus erupted in Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy as the security guards allegedly thrashed devotees from Andhra Pradesh
In a recent unsettling incident at the revered Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Trichy, a disturbance unfolded as temple guards reportedly clashed with Ayyappa devotees hailing from Andhra Pradesh. These devotees, in the midst of a pilgrimage spanning across Tamil Nadu before reaching their final destination of Sabarimala in Kerala, had made a stop at the Trichy temple as part of their sacred journey.
The root cause of the disturbance can be traced back to the devotees near the sanctum sanctorum, engaging in the chanting of ‘Govinda,’ a traditional mantra associated with Venkateshwara Swamy. It is reported that the security guards on duty instructed them to cease their chanting, which quickly escalated into a confrontation. In the ensuing scuffle, two Ayyappa devotees sustained injuries, with one pilgrim left sitting on the temple floor, visibly bleeding. The intensity of the situation prompted other Ayyappa devotees to gather, ultimately leading to the intervention of the local police.
Both parties involved filed official complaints, initiating an ongoing investigation into the matter. Labelling the episode as an act of arrogance on the part of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department, K Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP chief, announced that the Trichy district unit of the BJP plans to stage a protest outside the Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple. The primary objective of this protest is to demand the strictest actions against those deemed responsible for compromising the sanctity and harmony of the temple, according to Annamalai. The incident has sparked concerns about the need for preserving the peaceful coexistence of diverse religious practices within the sacred spaces of temples, emphasising the importance of mutual respect and understanding.
