In a recent interview, Stefano Sannino, the Secretary General of the European External Action Service, emphasised on the growing importance of security cooperation between the European Union (EU) and India, particularly in light of developments in the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea regions. Sannino highlighted the need for closer collaboration on hybrid and maritime security, signalling a shift towards a broader concept of security amidst global crises.
Sannino noted that while the EU and India have enjoyed a solid economic relationship with progress in trade, there is now a mutual recognition of the necessity for deeper security ties. He pointed to the evolving security landscape in regions such as the Indo-Pacific and the Red Sea, underlining the interconnectedness of security threats in today’s globalised world.

Sannino acknowledged the significance of ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and India. Sannino reiterated the importance of addressing issues related to market accessibility, enforcement mechanisms, and the inclusion of new elements such as sustainability components.
Regarding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Sannino clarified that while it is not part of the FTA negotiations, it aligns with the shared commitment to addressing climate change and promoting green agendas. He emphasised the need for positive conditions to support economic transitions towards a sustainable, green economy.
The interview highlighted the growing convergence of interests between the EU and India in the realms of security and trade, with both sides aiming to strengthen cooperation in response to evolving global challenges. As the partnership continues to evolve, closer collaboration on security and trade is expected to remain a cornerstone of EU-India relations.
