During the meetings, Wray and Sood talked about the importance of sharing information on criminal matters, coordinating efforts against transnational crimes, and addressing challenges posed by organised crime networks, cyber financial crimes, and terrorism
FBI Director Christopher Wray visited India and held meetings with key officials, including CBI Chief Praveen Sood. The discussions covered important issues such as extraditing individuals wanted by India and addressing cyber-enabled financial crimes. This visit took place amidst concerns about an alleged plot to assassinate a pro-Khalistan leader in the United States.

Wray had separate meetings with heads of various Indian investigative agencies, focusing on topics like homeland security, training, extradition, and activities related to pro-Khalistan elements. The discussions emphasised strengthening cooperation between India and the US in combating crime.

“The meeting focused on strengthening exchange of information on criminal matters, for improved coordination in combating transnational crimes and sharing of expertise in investigation of technology enabled crimes. Both agencies recognised the challenges posed by organised crime networks, cyber enabled financial crimes, ransomware threats, economic crimes and transnational crimes. The need to expedite sharing of evidence and for closer assistance in bringing criminals and fugitives to face justice was deliberated. It was also discussed to exchange best practices of FBI Academy, Quantico and CBI Academy, Ghaziabad,” CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

During the meetings, Wray and Sood talked about the importance of sharing information on criminal matters, coordinating efforts against transnational crimes, and addressing challenges posed by organised crime networks, cyber financial crimes, and terrorism. They highlighted the need for quicker responses to India’s requests for information.

The visit also aimed at enhancing collaboration by exchanging best practices between the FBI Academy in Quantico and the CBI Academy in Ghaziabad. It signified a step towards deepening cooperation and a shared commitment to combat various forms of crime through international police cooperation.

The discussions under the broad pillars of homeland security, training, extradition, and pro-Khalistan activities covered issues such as the illegal entry of Indian nationals into the US, deportation, and the extradition of suspects wanted by India. One key topic was the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a co-conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Additionally, concerns about pro-Khalistan elements and an alleged plot to assassinate a pro-Khalistan leader on US soil were discussed during Wray’s meetings.

Overall, the visit aimed at fostering a stronger relationship between the law enforcement agencies of India and the United States to address common challenges related to crime and security.
