The government has approved a budget of over Rs 20.2 crore to enhance the security systems in prisons by purchasing CCTV cameras, X-ray-based body scanners, and metal detectors. This initiative aims to modernise the current security measures in place.
According to sources within the Prison Department, the budget allocation is as follows: Rs 9.12 crore for body scanners, Rs 8.95 crore for CCTV cameras, and Rs 2.2 crore for metal detectors.
Currently, inmates undergo physical frisking by the jail security staff to prevent the smuggling of prohibited items. A prison official explained, “As of now inmates are physically frisked. The jail security staff conducts physical frisking of inmates to ensure no unwanted or prohibited item or article is smuggled inside.”
The official further noted, “We wanted to use technology rather than rely on such methods, which are also unpleasant for the inmates. Once this technology is in jail these problems will be sorted. This will also ensure there is no conflict or altercation between the inmates and jail staff because of frisking.”
Additionally, the government has approved funding for computer equipment as part of the E-prisons project, which aims to digitize all prison records and management systems in the state. This step towards computerization is expected to streamline operations and improve efficiency in the prison system.
