A user shared a thread explaining how a scammer was trying to get 45,000 from her. She posted her story to alert others

A woman recently shared an incident on a social platform where she successfully foiled an attempt by a man trying to scam her. Initially, she received a call from the scammer, and despite not recognising the initial ‘red flags,’ she eventually realised she was being targeted. Her story prompted numerous users to share similar experiences they had faced and how they dealt with such situations.

One user, Tamanna, recounted a call from a man who claimed he wanted to transfer her dad’s ‘LIC money’ to her Google Pay account. The caller even confirmed her Google Pay number, and initially, Tamanna didn’t suspect anything, cooperating with the man. He informed her that he would be sending 25,000 through two Google Pay transactions. However, Tamanna’s suspicions arose when she received an SMS resembling a bank transaction alert.

During the call, the man rushed her to confirm the transaction, but upon checking, the SMS displayed 50,000 instead of the expected 5,000. This discrepancy raised Tamanna’s alarm, especially when the man urged her to return 45,000 to him using Google Pay. Wisely, she communicated that she hadn’t received the money in her account and asked him to wait until her dad returned. The scammer, realising he was caught, vanished.

“In my rush to get back to him (he’s still talking), I say yes I got it. He says: “Good. Now I will transfer 5k.” I hear a woosh on her phone and he asks me to check if I got it again. He is still rushing me while I move the phone away from my ear. I have this second SMS,” she added. However, instead of 5,000, the SMS shows that the amount she supposedly received is 50,000.

“In hindsight: I didn’t suspect anything in the beginning because of the timing of the call. I didn’t get time to critically think because the guy did tell me his name and was ending every sentence with beta. He had also literally rushed me throughout the call,” she tweeted as she wrapped up her post.

Tamanna shared her experience online, leading to various responses from users. One user described a similar experience of editing an SMS to outsmart the scammer, while another recommended reporting the scammer to authorities through the designated channels. A third user expressed the unsettling nature of such scams, highlighting the potential risks involved. The post garnered an array of responses, with users sharing their insights and recounting their encounters with scams.
