The India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue in New Delhi this week will focus on deepening security cooperation between the two countries
The forthcoming 2+2 ministerial dialogue in New Delhi between the United States and India is set to delve into various pivotal discussions, with a particular emphasis on bolstering security cooperation and partnership, as highlighted by the State Department ahead of this significant meeting. Scheduled for November 10, the dialogue will be hosted by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, welcoming their American counterparts, Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The State Department’s Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel, emphasised the substantial partnership between India and the U.S., pointing out that the deepening of security cooperation will be a central focus during the talks. Patel highlighted the previous discussions on this matter during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit earlier in the year, expressing Secretary Blinken’s anticipation to engage directly with Indian counterparts on this significant aspect.
Moreover, a senior State Department official stressed the mutual objective of preventing the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, underscoring its importance as a key agenda item during the 2+2 ministerial meeting. In addition to discussing the Indo-Pacific region, Russia, Ukraine, and bilateral issues, the dialogue will serve as a platform for comprehensive discussions on strategic and defence matters between the two nations.
Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, emphasised the importance of the 2+2 Dialogue as a forum for high-level discussions on strategic and defence issues, further detailing Secretary Blinken’s additional meetings with Indian officials. Lu also acknowledged the inclusion of China as a topic for discussion, particularly focusing on cooperation within the Indo-Pacific region and exchanging insights on border issues between India and China.
The imminent meeting between President Biden and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco is anticipated to play a significant role in the discussions, reflecting the interconnected nature of global diplomatic engagements and the collaboration between India and the United States in addressing various geopolitical challenges.
