Internet Services Restricted In Balochistan

The decision has faced criticism from independent candidates, including lawyer Jibran Nasir in Karachi, who heavily relies on social media outreach due to budget constraints

As elections in Balochistan are scheduled on February 8 , for the smooth functioning of the process authorities have decided to limit internet services in certain polling stations. Jan Achakzai, the caretaker information minister, informed about the potential threat of terrorist activities during the polling process. He expressed worries that terrorists might exploit social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter for communication, leading to the decision to restrict internet access in sensitive regions such as Turbat, Mach, and Chaman.

Jan Achakzai emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and security of citizens, given the recent surge in terrorist attacks targeting political parties and their campaign gatherings. The move aims to create a secure environment for the electoral process, especially in areas that have witnessed recent terrorist incidents.

“Ensuring the safety and security of ordinary citizens is of utmost importance, as there is a concern that terrorists may exploit social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and other similar channels for communication purposes,” he wrote in an X post.

However, the decision has faced criticism from independent candidates, including lawyer Jibran Nasir in Karachi, who heavily relies on social media outreach due to budget constraints. Nasir voiced concerns, considering the internet shutdowns as setting a “dangerous precedent” and violating constitutional rights, particularly freedom of expression.

Despite intermittent network outages, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja assured the public of an uninterrupted polling day experience nationwide. He ruled out the possibility of communication and internet service disruptions during the elections.

The situation differs in Sindh, where caretaker Information Minister Ahmed Shah stated that no decision has been made regarding the suspension of internet and communication services on February 8. With less than a week until the polls, security measures have intensified nationwide to create a conducive environment for the electoral process.
