Authorities cancel VVIP passes and restrict vehicles following tragic incident
In the aftermath of a devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and injuries to approximately 60 others, state authorities have implemented significant measures to enhance public safety.
Additionally, a complete ban on four-wheeled vehicles within the Mahakumbh zone has been enforced until February 4. District vehicles from neighbouring areas are also restricted from entering the zone. Authorities have established one-way routes throughout the area to alleviate congestion and streamline movement.
The tragic incident occurred during the early hours as millions of devotees gathered for a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. Overwhelming crowds led to multiple stampedes, resulting in chaos and numerous casualties.
In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have called for immediate support measures and urged the public to utilise nearby riverbanks for the holy dip to prevent further incidents.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, with expectations of over 400 million attendees during its 45-day duration. Despite extensive preparations, including increased security and infrastructure enhancements, the recent tragedy underscores the challenges of managing such massive crowds.
Authorities remain on high alert, continuously reviewing and adjusting safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all participants as the festival progresses.
