Paris Olympics At Target Of Hackers

Vincent Strubel, the head of France’s national cybersecurity agency (ANSSI), has issued a stark warning regarding the upcoming Paris Olympics. In an interview with AFP, Strubel emphasised the vulnerability of the Games to various forms of cyber attacks, particularly amidst strained relations between France and Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine.

“We are preparing for all types of attacks,” Strubel stated, underlining the heightened risk posed by state-sponsored actors aiming to disrupt the Olympics. He highlighted potential targets such as the opening ceremony and public transport infrastructure. The backdrop of diplomatic tensions between France and Russia has raised concerns, with Moscow accusing the International Olympic Committee of discrimination against Russian athletes.

In addition to state-backed cyber threats, Strubel identified cybercriminals seeking financial gain and hacktivists seeking attention as significant dangers. He expressed particular concern about the possibility of a multitude of smaller-scale attacks overwhelming cybersecurity defenses and diverting attention from more serious threats targeting critical infrastructure.

There have been numerous cyber incidents during major sporting events in past . Strubel referenced the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, where Russian military intelligence was blamed for unleashing destructive malware that disrupted operations. With the Paris Games fast approaching, there is a heightened focus on cybersecurity measures to safeguard against potential disruptions.

Amidst these concerns, France’s leading IT services and cybersecurity company, Atos, faces significant financial challenges. Despite its pivotal role as the technology partner for the International Olympic Committee and a key cybersecurity provider for the Paris Games, Atos is grappling with a severe financial crisis. Strubel assured that ANSSI is closely monitoring Atos’ systems and conducting regular audits to mitigate any risks.

As preparations for the Paris Olympics intensify, cybersecurity remains a paramount concern, with stakeholders working diligently to fortify defenses and mitigate potential threats to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the Games.
