Shri Rajeev Jain, an esteemed member of the National Human Rights Commission, during his recent address at the BW Security World’s 40 under 40 awards ceremony shared his valuable insights on the topic ,’Striking a balance between Human Rights and National Security.’
Mr. Jain underscored the importance of a measured response in addressing challenges that threaten both individual rights and the security of our nation. One notable example he shared pertained to the Human Rights Commission’s approach when educated youngsters were drawn towards extremist organisations like ISIS. Reflecting on this, he conveyed, “A few years ago, when educated youngsters were joining ISIS, we didn’t resort to aggressive measures. Instead, we diverted their attention and explained the consequences. This approach proved quite successful.”
Expanding on this theme, Mr. Jain highlighted a recent instance during the grand Ramjanam Bhoomi event on January 22. He drew attention to the evolving strategies employed by law enforcement, stating, “For instance, if any ambulance has to pass during a VIP movement, police are being trained for such events. They try to build a green corridor in which they allow the ambulance to pass irrespective of the VIP movement.”

He noted, “Nowadays, the government is giving private companies tenders of defence forces. He stated, “Surveillance and Privacy: Implementing effective security measures of a nation may trigger the security of humans, this may, as a result, turn as a threat to human rights.”

He stated, “Political Pressures: Governments may face pressure from various interest groups, including powerful security agencies, to prioritise security over human rights, making it difficult to maintain a balanced approach.”

He noted, “Transparency and Trust: Building public trust in security measures requires transparency and accountability. Striking a balance between transparency and safeguarding sensitive information may serve as a challenging point to the government.”
