Secret Service Blamed For Security Failures In Assassination Attempt On Trump At Pennsylvania Rally

The report also highlighted gaps in coordination between the Secret Service, local law enforcement, and state authorities

A new report has revealed that the U.S. Secret Service was responsible for multiple security failures during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13. The incident resulted in one death and several injuries.

An internal review by the agency, as reported by Xinhua news agency, pointed to several oversights, including the failure to utilise technology that could have detected the attacker. Hours before the rally, the suspect flew a drone over the venue, but agents did not take action.

The report also highlighted gaps in coordination between the Secret Service, local law enforcement, and state authorities. The advance team of the Secret Service, tasked with securing Trump’s safety, did not inform local police snipers to keep a nearby rooftop under surveillance—an oversight that played a critical role in the attacker’s access to a vantage point.

The fallout from the incident led to the resignation of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. She faced intense questioning from lawmakers at a Congressional hearing, where she was asked to explain why the agency failed to secure key areas, such as the rooftop.

At a recent news briefing, Acting Director Ronald Rowe acknowledged significant lapses in security planning, admitting that a “lack of clarity” within the Secret Service contributed to the failure.

Just before the shooting began, some rally attendees spotted a suspicious individual climbing onto the rooftop and alerted local police. However, Trump’s protective detail was unaware that the police were already searching for this person. The inability of Secret Service agents and local law enforcement to communicate quickly was another issue, as they were using different radio frequencies and were stationed in separate locations, which delayed their response.

“It’s important that we hold ourselves accountable for the failures of July 13th, and that we use the lessons learned to make sure that we do not have another failure like this again,” said Rowe.

In response to the assassination attempt, the Secret Service has allocated additional resources typically not available to someone in Trump’s current position. Despite these measures, another incident occurred just weeks later. A man was arrested at Trump International Golf Club in South Florida after a Secret Service agent noticed a rifle barrel sticking out from a fence. Trump remained unharmed.

The series of incidents has led to increased scrutiny of the agency. In a swift move, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill to enhance Secret Service protection for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, signaling a need for greater security measures in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
