Threats like phishing emails and fraudulent attempts to procure sensitive data are alarmingly common. Hence, individuals must exercise unwavering caution when seeking information online. This was stated by Lt. Bhaskar Shukla, CSO-Delhi NCR at JK Cement, emphasising the imperative of individuals (especially senior citizens living in remote towns) to be well-versed in cyber laws and adhering to basic security practices at BW Security World Conclave and Excellence Awards 2023.
Luminaries from the realms of physical and cyber security in India, also elucidated on how India at a crucial juncture in the evolution of its digital landscape, where data privacy breaches and digital literacy deficits act collateral damage in unprecedented ways.
Col. Arun Hariharan, one of the panellists, made a compelling observation. He highlighted how India experienced a watershed moment in data privacy and cybercrime awareness in 2016. “The surge in e-transactions, driven by demonetisation, led to the inadvertent exposure of innocuous data online, which, in the wrong hands, can be exploited. Moreover, the burgeoning growth of smart cities, while promising unparalleled efficiency and convenience, introduces a myriad of questions surrounding the extent of surveillance and data collection,” he conveyed.
Underlining the threats posed by datafication, Jaspreet Singh, Partner & Clients and Markets Leader-Advisory Services at Grant Thornton, pointed out, “Sharing through electronic maps has significantly simplified the process of accessing an individual’s home address. Additionally, the Passenger Name Record (PNR) data of train passengers, replete with identification details used for ticket bookings, is readily accessible, which proliferation of accessible data poses a looming threat, underscoring the critical need for stringent privacy controls.”
As we gaze into the future, the relentless march of technology gives rise to apprehensions regarding the further encroachment into our personal lives. Veena Gupta, Founder-MD of Seam Risk Solutions India, underscored a crucial aspect of this responsibility stating that often, we voluntarily or unknowingly provide our information, especially in the digital realm. She added that apps even serve as reminders of the significance of exercising caution regarding the information we share online.
