WhatsApp clarified that these accounts were banned for violating its platform policies and compromising user privacy, particularly through scams and spam
WhatsApp has taken significant action against a staggering 22.31 million accounts in India during the first quarter of 2024. This marks a notable increase from the same period last year, almost doubling the number of bans. The surge in bans highlights the growing challenge of online scams and user safety issues in the country.
The messaging platform’s crackdown was based on various factors, including user complaints, violations of Indian laws or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, and directives from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC). WhatsApp stated that these bans were in accordance with specific rules outlined in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
According to WhatsApp’s monthly report for January, February, and March 2024, there was a steady rise in the number of banned accounts. In January, 6.73 million accounts were removed, with 1.36 million of those being proactively banned, meaning they were shut down before any user complaints were lodged.
The trend continued into February, with 7.63 million accounts banned, including 1.42 million proactively banned. March saw a further increase, with 7.95 million accounts banned, including 1.43 million proactively banned. This upward trend indicates WhatsApp’s intensified efforts to tackle misuse of its platform.
WhatsApp clarified that these accounts were banned for violating its platform policies and compromising user privacy, particularly through scams and spam. The significant increase in banned accounts underscores the widespread misuse of the platform, especially in India, which boasts over 530 million monthly active users—the highest of any country.
As a Meta-owned instant messaging platform, WhatsApp advises users to acquaint themselves with its “Acceptable Use of Our Services” guidelines. It also emphasises the importance of account security and encourages users to promptly report any unauthorised access.
