8,000 CCTV Cameras To Enhance Security In Delhi Residential Areas

Each locality will have between 900 and 1,100 cameras, with the project being executed in 12 separate phases, officials said

Authorities are set to install over 8,000 CCTV cameras across key residential areas in Delhi, including Lodhi Colony, Jor Bagh, Laxmi Bai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, and Kali Bari Marg. The project, funded through the MLA Local Area Development (MLA-LAD) scheme, is expected to be completed within the next two months, according to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD).

Each locality will have between 900 and 1,100 cameras, with the project being executed in 12 separate phases, officials said. A senior PWD official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the initiative would also include bullet surveillance cameras, security barricades, and electrically operated gate systems to bolster safety in these areas.

“Each project costs around Rs 95–98 lakh, and bids have been invited for 12 such projects. Of these, eight focus on installing approximately 1,000 cameras per area, while the remaining four deal with integrated systems combining security barricades and CCTV cameras. Once contractors are finalised, the installation and operationalisation will be completed within 30 days,” the official said.

In Lodhi Colony, for instance, security measures will include installing electrically operated barricades at nine locations and moveable steel barricades at another 14 sites. These will be complemented by 40 surveillance cameras placed near entry points. The placement of barricades and cameras has been coordinated with residents and local Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs).

The project will also provide technical assistance for operating the swing gates for a year. A similar system is planned for Kali Bari Marg, DIZ Marg, and Laxmi Bai Nagar, officials added.

The initiative, while driven by the PWD, overlaps with the jurisdiction of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which oversees the New Delhi municipal area. An NDMC official noted that such collaborative efforts are not unprecedented. “In the past, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit used her MLA-LAD funds through the PWD to enhance facilities like open gyms in residential areas,” the official said.

The comprehensive installation of CCTV cameras and enhanced security systems aims to improve surveillance and safety, addressing concerns from residents about increasing security risks in these high-footfall areas.
