AI-Based Monitoring To Enhance Passenger Safety In Indore City Buses

Generative AI
The AI system will send real-time alerts to the city bus control room, enabling swift intervention if any irregularities are detected

Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL) is set to roll out an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system in city buses, aimed at monitoring the activities of drivers and conductors to ensure passenger safety. The system will assess factors such as driver alertness, health conditions, and potential distractions, including mobile phone use or intoxication. This initiative, beginning with a pilot in five buses, will later be expanded based on its success.

The AI system will send real-time alerts to the city bus control room, enabling swift intervention if any irregularities are detected. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav highlighted that Indore is pioneering this effort as part of its broader “Digital Indore” vision, emphasizing safety as a top priority. “We were the first in the country to introduce a CCTV surveillance policy, and now, we are moving towards AI-based monitoring in our buses,” Bhargav stated.

As part of the project, breath analyzers (liquor detectors) will be installed in buses to prevent operation under the influence of alcohol. The bus will only start once the driver passes the breath test. The AI system will also monitor driver behavior through dash cameras, flagging instances where the driver appears unwell, sleepy, or distracted.

Shivam Verma, Municipal Corporation Commissioner, expressed that the goal is to improve passenger safety. “The AI system will alert the control room if the driver feels sleepy or shows signs of discomfort, ensuring a safer travel experience for all passengers.”

This initiative, using AI to safeguard commuters, marks a significant step forward in public transport safety for Indore, setting a new standard in passenger security and monitoring efficiency.
