Argentina’s Airport Security Police (PSA) has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyberattack that exposed the personal and financial data of its officers and civilian staff. The breach has raised concerns about the vulnerability of sensitive government systems.
Unauthorised Deductions Exposed
Reports indicate that an unidentified threat actor infiltrated PSA’s payroll systems, deducting small amounts from employees’ salaries. The fraudulent deductions ranged between 2,000 and 5,000 pesos (approximately USD 100 to USD 245) and were disguised under misleading labels like “DD mayor” and “DD seguros.”
Sources suggest the breach may have been facilitated by a vulnerability in the systems of Banco Nación, the bank responsible for processing PSA’s payroll. Local media speculated that the attack could have originated either from within Argentina or abroad, possibly with internal collaboration.
PSA’s Response & Uncertain Motives
In response to the breach, PSA has taken measures to block certain services and has initiated an internal cybersecurity awareness campaign. However, it remains unclear whether the attack was financially or politically motivated. Authorities are also yet to confirm the total amount stolen.
Broader Cybersecurity Concerns
This incident is not an isolated case in Argentina’s growing battle with cyber threats. In December, hackers breached two key e-government platforms, Mi Argentina and SUBE, which manage digital IDs and public transport cards, respectively. The attackers, identified by the pseudonym “h4xx0r1337,” exposed the personal data of millions of citizens. Details of the breach remain under investigation.
Earlier in July, Telecom Argentina fell victim to a ransomware attack that encrypted up to 18,000 workstations using stolen administrative credentials. Additionally, in April, hackers claimed access to a Central Bank of Argentina database containing customer names and ID numbers.
