The expansion of AWS’s cloud infrastructure in India underscores the country’s growing importance as a digital and technological hub
Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, has announced a significant investment of over INR 1.29 trillion (USD 15 billion) to expand its cloud infrastructure in India. The move aims to strengthen India’s digital capabilities and fuel economic growth.
A major portion of this investment, USD 8.3 billion, will be directed towards the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra. This development is expected to contribute approximately USD 15.3 billion to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, supporting over 81,300 full-time jobs annually across sectors such as telecommunications, construction, electricity generation, and data centre operations.
This pledge forms part of a larger USD 12.7 billion investment that AWS has earmarked for India’s cloud infrastructure by 2030.
Strengthening Maharashtra’s Digital Hub
AWS and the Government of Maharashtra formalised the investment plan during the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed optimism about the collaboration, calling it a transformative development for the state.
“I am pleased to announce the signing of a landmark MoU with Amazon Web Services, one of the foremost hyperscalers in the world. AWS’s decision to set up its operations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is a pivotal moment for Maharashtra,” Fadnavis said.
Since 2016, AWS has already invested more than USD 3.7 billion in Maharashtra’s cloud infrastructure, solidifying the state’s position as a digital innovation hub.
Telangana Expansion Plans
In a parallel move, AWS also revealed plans to invest INR 600 billion (USD 7.2 billion) to further develop its data centre infrastructure in Telangana. The announcement followed discussions at Davos between Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu, and senior AWS executives.
So far, AWS has invested around USD 4.4 billion in Telangana, with three operational sites established through an investment of nearly USD 1 billion.
Boost For India’s Digital Landscape
The expansion of AWS’s cloud infrastructure in India underscores the country’s growing importance as a digital and technological hub. The investments are expected to bolster India’s position in cloud services, data management, and emerging technologies, providing critical support for enterprises and government initiatives.
AWS’s commitment to Maharashtra and Telangana also signals increasing confidence in India’s digital future, as the demand for cloud services and data-driven solutions continues to rise. The initiative aligns with India’s broader push towards digital transformation and technological advancement, promising new opportunities for both businesses and the workforce.
