The ANPR system captures and analyses vehicle registration plates near station entrances, adding an additional layer of security
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has deployed an upgraded AI-powered surveillance system across six metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road, aimed at bolstering commuter safety and perimeter monitoring. The new setup integrates artificial intelligence-driven video analytics and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, marking a departure from earlier systems that focused primarily on station interiors. The updated surveillance network now extends to areas surrounding the stations, enhancing situational awareness and rapid response capabilities.
BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao said the system is designed to offer real-time alerts and support swift action in the face of emerging threats. “With AI and ANPR integration, we can now actively monitor station environments, quickly flag suspicious activity or irregularities, and respond more effectively to potential threats. This represents a major step towards a safer metro experience in Bengaluru,” he said. The ANPR system captures and analyses vehicle registration plates near station entrances, adding an additional layer of security.
Officials say the upgraded surveillance will also aid in crowd management and facilitate coordination with law enforcement, particularly during emergencies or periods of increased security concern. Following this pilot rollout at six stations, BMRCL plans to expand the technology across the broader metro network in the near future, aligning with a wider effort to modernise public transport infrastructure and improve urban safety.
