State-owned BEML Ltd, a leading defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has been awarded a Rs 136-crore contract to supply indigenously developed High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) to the Indian armed forces. The vehicles are set to play a critical role in the Battle Field Surveillance System (BFSS) project, which aims to bolster India’s defence capabilities.

The HMVs, manufactured at BEML’s state-of-the-art facilities, are designed to perform in some of the most challenging terrains and environmental conditions. Featuring advanced engineering, the HMV 8×8 model incorporates key technologies such as an independent suspension system, a high-power air-cooled engine, a central tyre inflation system, an anti-lock braking system, and a backbone tube chassis design.

According to BEML, these features ensure the vehicles’ exceptional reliability, mobility, and operational safety. The HMVs are capable of functioning in extreme temperatures ranging from -20°C to 55°C and can operate at altitudes up to 5,000 metres above sea level, making them ideal for diverse military applications.

Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML, highlighted the significance of the contract in strengthening India’s defence preparedness. “The indigenously developed HMV 8×8 vehicles showcase our engineering excellence and dedication to equipping India’s armed forces with cutting-edge mobility solutions,” Roy stated.

This development aligns with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which focuses on self-reliance in defence production. By designing and manufacturing these vehicles domestically, BEML continues to contribute to India’s vision of reducing dependence on foreign defence imports.

The addition of these advanced mobility solutions to the armed forces’ inventory marks a significant step towards enhancing the operational effectiveness and readiness of India’s military in diverse combat scenarios.
