Google Chrome Integrates AI into ‘Enhanced Protection’ for Real-Time Security

The AI-powered Enhanced Protection is turned off by default, but users can activate it manually by navigating to Settings > Security on Windows

Google Chrome has upgraded its existing ‘Enhanced Protection’ feature by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to provide real-time security against dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions. The update, first spotted by a user named Leo on X, has now been rolled out to Chrome’s stable channel across all platforms after undergoing three months of testing in the Canary version.

AI-Powered Safe Browsing

Enhanced Protection has been part of Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature for years, but with AI integration, it is expected to offer smarter and faster threat detection. While Google previously described the feature as providing ‘proactive protection’ against malicious websites, the terminology has now been updated to reflect its AI-powered capabilities.

Though Google has not detailed exactly how the AI-enhanced version differs from the earlier model, it is likely that the technology is being used to detect patterns in real-time. This could allow Chrome to identify and warn users about potentially harmful sites, even those that have not been previously flagged by Google’s databases.

Stronger Protection For Downloads & Extensions

In addition to website security, the AI-powered Enhanced Protection performs in-depth scans on downloads, assessing files for any suspicious activity before they reach a user’s device. The feature is also expected to enhance security around Chrome extensions, helping users avoid those that might pose security risks.

However, Google has clarified that when Enhanced Protection is enabled, some browsing data is sent to Google for analysis. This data helps refine the AI model, but users concerned about privacy should be aware of this aspect.

How To Enable AI-Enhanced Protection

The AI-powered Enhanced Protection is turned off by default, but users can activate it manually by navigating to Settings > Security on Windows, Android, and iOS devices.

With this update, Google aims to offer a more responsive and intelligent security system, ensuring Chrome users stay better protected against evolving online threats.
