Government Blocks Over Thousand Cybercriminal Skype IDs

One common tactic employed by these cyber fraudsters is known as the ‘parcel scam,’ where victims are informed about a parcel containing contraband items, such as drugs or fake passports, addressed to them

The government has taken action against cybercriminals operating across borders, blocking over 1,000 Skype IDs involved in online intimidation, blackmail, and extortion. According to an official statement from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), these criminals have been posing as officials from various regulatory and enforcement agencies to carry out their illicit activities.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, the I4C warned internet users about the rising number of complaints related to cybercrimes. These criminals have been targeting individuals, deceiving them into believing they are involved in illegal activities or accidents, and then demanding money to resolve the fabricated situations.

One common tactic employed by these cyber fraudsters is known as the ‘parcel scam,’ where victims are informed about a parcel containing contraband items, such as drugs or fake passports, addressed to them. Additionally, victims may receive calls claiming that a family member or friend has been detained for a crime or accident, demanding payment for their release.

The statement further revealed that some victims have been subjected to “digital arrests,” where they are coerced into remaining visible over video conferencing platforms until their demands are met. To appear genuine, the fraudsters often use studio setups resembling police stations or government offices and wear uniforms during these calls.

The Union Home Ministry has been actively collaborating with other ministries, agencies, and organizations, including the RBI, to combat these fraudulent activities. The I4C is providing technical support to police authorities across states and union territories to identify and investigate such cases.

In cooperation with Microsoft, the I4C has successfully blocked the Skype IDs associated with these criminal activities. Moreover, efforts are underway to block SIM cards, mobile devices, and mule accounts used by these fraudsters.

In response to this growing threat of cybercrime, citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities by calling 1930 or visiting http://www.cybercrime.gov.in for assistance. The government remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard individuals from falling victim to these organized online economic crimes.
