Taking a significant step towards enhancing road safety and crime prevention, Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur has inaugurated a network of 128 CCTV cameras at 19 strategic locations along National Highway (NH)-44, from Ambala border to Kundli border in Sonepat. The inauguration was conducted from the CCTV control room at the office of the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Highways) in Karnal.
These high-tech cameras will closely monitor vehicles on the busy highway, with automatic challans issued to traffic rule violators.
Advanced Surveillance System For Safer Highways
The DGP highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce road accidents and ensure better adherence to traffic rules. “Among these 128 cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at nine locations, while surveillance cameras cover 10 other sites. The ANPR cameras are integrated with the police’s Intelligent Traffic Management System, enabling officers to access the complete history of any vehicle,” he explained.
The system includes 72 ANPR cameras, 38 surveillance cameras, and 18 evidence cameras, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology. These cameras can automatically send alerts about vehicles involved in criminal activities or those reported stolen. The data is then forwarded to relevant police stations for prompt action.
Wider Coverage Across Key Districts
Kapur noted that similar surveillance systems have been set up in 10 districts, including Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Ambala, Panipat, Rohtak, Panchkula, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Sonepat. Additionally, drones are being deployed in Gurugram to monitor traffic violations and ensure compliance with road regulations.
Impact On Road Safety
The DGP revealed that Haryana has witnessed a positive impact on road safety in 2024 compared to 2023. “There have been 657 fewer road accidents this year. Fatalities have dropped by 279, and 432 fewer people were injured. The total number of fatal accidents decreased from 4,652 in 2023 to 4,389 this year, marking a 5.65 per cent reduction,” Kapur stated.
The Haryana Police’s proactive use of technology aims to make highways safer and more secure for commuters while streamlining crime detection and response.
