India’s Healthcare Sector Most Targeted By Cyberattacks: Report

Cybersecurity
Over the last six months, organisations in India faced an average of 3,291 attacks per week—significantly higher than the global average of 1,847, the report revealed

India’s healthcare sector has emerged as the most impacted by cyberattacks, with an average of 8,614 weekly attacks per organisation, according to cybersecurity solutions provider Check Point Software Technologies. The report, titled *The State of Global Cyber Security 2025*, highlighted the rising cyber threat landscape in India, noting that the education and research sector followed closely with 7,983 weekly attacks, while government and military organisations recorded 4,731.

Over the last six months, organisations in India faced an average of 3,291 attacks per week—significantly higher than the global average of 1,847, the report revealed. Among the prevalent threats in India, two Remote Access Trojans (RATs), one infostealer (Formbook), a ransomware strain (Maze), and a botnet and downloader (FakeUpdates) have been identified as the most common forms of malware.

One of the most alarming findings of the report was the breach of 500 GB of biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, in May 2024. This breach further highlights the vulnerability of sensitive data in India. Additionally, the increasing role of generative AI (GenAI) in cyberattacks was pointed out. The report noted that 2024 witnessed a surge in cyberattacks driven by GenAI, which was used to amplify disinformation campaigns, create deepfake videos, and accelerate attacks with the aim of stealing money and influencing public opinion.

The report also highlighted a significant rise in infostealer attacks, which surged by 58 per cent. This indicates a growing sophistication of cybercriminals and a maturing cyber ecosystem. Over 70 per cent of infected devices were personal, as threat actors increasingly targeted bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments to breach corporate resources.

Maya Horowitz, VP of Research at Check Point Software, commented on the evolving threat landscape, stating, “Cybersecurity in 2025 is not only about protecting networks; it’s about safeguarding trust in our systems and institutions. The *State of Global Cyber Security 2025* highlights the rapid evolution of threats and reinforces the need for resilience in the face of persistent and complex adversaries.”

On a global scale, the report also revealed a concerning trend, with a 44 per cent increase in cyberattacks year on year. It highlighted that nation-states are shifting from acute attacks to chronic campaigns designed to erode trust and destabilise systems worldwide.

These findings serve as a stark reminder of the growing cyber risks faced by organisations in India and across the globe, emphasising the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data and maintain trust in digital systems.
