Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan has announced plans to roll out short-term cybersecurity courses across all state universities, aiming to build a robust workforce of cybersecurity experts. Speaking at the Cyber Education for Cyber Security Awards event on Sunday, the Governor, who also serves as the Chancellor of state-run universities, said he would soon meet with Vice-Chancellors to discuss the development and implementation of these programmes.
The initiative, described as a step towards “creating a new generation of cyber warriors,” comes in response to the rising incidence of cybercrimes in Maharashtra and across the globe. “These short-term courses will serve as a training ground for the next generation of cybersecurity experts, ensuring that we stay ahead in this critical area,” Radhakrishnan said during his address.
Equipping Students For Safer Digital Future
The Governor highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world, particularly as digital transactions and technologies become a central part of everyday life. “The increasing reliance on digital technologies for payments and other activities has made cybersecurity more important than ever. We must develop systems that prevent cybercrime rather than react to it after the damage has been done,” he noted.
By integrating cybersecurity education into mainstream university curricula, Radhakrishnan aims to equip students with the skills needed to combat online threats effectively. The courses will target a broad range of students, enabling them to take up roles as cybersecurity professionals and contribute to a safer digital ecosystem.
Rising Cyber Threats & Need For Awareness
The announcement comes against the backdrop of increasing cybercrime incidents in Maharashtra, as more individuals and businesses adopt digital platforms for transactions. Radhakrishnan emphasised the vulnerability of small vendors and other first-time users of digital payment systems, stressing the importance of educating both the public and law enforcement agencies about cybersecurity practices.
He also called for a multi-dimensional approach to tackling cybercrime, including enacting stronger laws, increasing investments in cybersecurity, and raising awareness about secure online practices, especially among youth and senior citizens.
Collaborative Efforts Recognised
During the event, the Governor praised initiatives like the Cyber Education for Cyber Security Awards for their role in spreading awareness about cybersecurity. He specifically lauded the efforts of Quick Heal Foundation and Quick Heal Technologies Ltd. in empowering students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in the field.
Anupama Katkar, Chairperson of Quick Heal Foundation, welcomed the initiative, calling it a progressive move to address the growing need for cybersecurity experts. “This initiative will not only raise awareness but also create a pipeline of skilled professionals who can protect our digital world,” she said.

With plans underway to integrate cybersecurity education into university programmes, Maharashtra is set to become a hub for developing talent in the field. The initiative underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address cyber threats and signals a significant step towards building a secure digital future.
