The policy comes at a critical time when Maharashtra is a significant contributor to India’s rapidly expanding USD 600 billion digital economy, with the state accounting for over Rs 6 lakh crore
The Maharashtra government is gearing up to introduce its first-ever cybersecurity policy to fortify the state’s IT and digital infrastructure against growing cyber threats. The policy, titled “Cyber Surakshit Maharashtra”, was announced by Ashish Shelar, Minister for Information and Technology, on Friday.
Unveiling plans for the policy, Shelar also announced the formation of the Cybersecurity Policy Taskforce 2025, a key initiative under the BJP-Sena-NCP government’s ambitious 100-day action plan.
“The state’s first Cybersecurity Policy 2025 is being developed to create a secure and robust cybersecurity ecosystem. This will ensure the safety and security of citizens, industries, startups, academia, and government institutions,” Shelar stated.
Addressing Growing Digital Challenges
The policy comes at a critical time when Maharashtra is a significant contributor to India’s rapidly expanding USD 600 billion digital economy, with the state accounting for over Rs 6 lakh crore. The increasing reliance on technology and the rise in cybercrime incidents have necessitated a structured and forward-thinking approach to cybersecurity.
The policy aims to protect nearly 800 government services currently being offered online to citizens. It will provide a roadmap for combating cyber threats while fostering economic growth through a secure digital infrastructure.
Strategic Framework For Cybersecurit
Aligned with India’s National Cybersecurity Policy 2013 and the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2020, the Maharashtra Cybersecurity Policy 2025 will address both current and emerging cyber challenges. It focuses on:
Securing government and semi-government IT infrastructure.
Promoting the growth of the cybersecurity industry through innovation and skill development.
Encouraging research and collaboration among government bodies, industries, academia, and citizens.
Vision For Future
“Maharashtra’s goal is to ensure a safe digital environment for all stakeholders while supporting the growth of industries and startups in the state. Our cybersecurity policy will act as a catalyst for innovation and development in the sector,” Shelar said.
By integrating global best practices and fostering partnerships, the policy seeks to enhance Maharashtra’s resilience against cyber threats, ultimately creating a safer and more sustainable digital future.
