The decision to enhance his security comes in the wake of previous threats
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved Z-category security cover for Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, citing a heightened threat perception, officials said on Thursday. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been directed to take over his security, ensuring round-the-clock protection at his residence in Dharamshala, as well as during his visits to other states.
A senior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the CRPF is currently conducting a detailed security audit before formally assuming responsibility. Until now, the Himachal Pradesh Police has been providing security to the Dalai Lama, and they will continue to protect him during his travels outside the state.
The decision to enhance his security comes in the wake of previous threats. In 2020, the Himachal Pradesh Police increased vigilance after the arrest of a Chinese spy, Charlie Peng, who allegedly bribed individuals to gather intelligence on the Dalai Lama and his aides.
Z-Category Security For Sambit Patra In Manipur
The MHA has also decided to extend Z-category security to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sambit Patra during his visits to Manipur. The northeastern state has been witnessing ethnic violence since 2023, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of 60,000 people.
Patra, who represents Puri in Parliament, is the BJP’s in-charge for Manipur. Given the volatile situation, security agencies have recommended heightened protection measures for him while he is in the state.
What Does Z-Category Security Cover?
The Z-category security detail typically includes 35 to 40 armed personnel, including commandos, who work in three shifts to ensure round-the-clock protection.
The CRPF provides security to several high-profile individuals under different categories such as Z+, Z, Y, Y+, and X. Among the prominent figures under CRPF protection are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla.
With the latest security upgrade, authorities aim to mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of both the Dalai Lama and Sambit Patra, particularly given their significant roles in the spiritual and political landscape of the country.
