Odisha Police Deploy Armoured Vehicles With LMGs To Bolster Counter-terror Response

One vehicle has been stationed in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, while the second has been deployed in the coastal city of Puri ahead of the annual Rath Yatra

The Odisha Police have strengthened their counter-terrorism and rapid response capabilities with the induction of two advanced bullet-proof armoured vehicles, each equipped with roof-mounted light machine guns (LMGs). The move comes amid heightened security concerns and an increased focus on preparedness in urban and high-risk zones.

Strategic deployment ahead of Rath Yatra

One vehicle has been stationed in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, while the second has been deployed in the coastal city of Puri ahead of the annual Rath Yatra—one of India’s largest religious processions, which draws millions of pilgrims and tourists.

The vehicles are built to withstand heavy artillery and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), offering tactical superiority in scenarios ranging from convoy protection to hostage rescue.

Enhanced protection and firepower

Designed with modern urban warfare in mind, each vehicle can carry five to six personnel and comes fitted with ballistic flooring, reinforced armour plating, and multiple firing ports. Rear-mounted cameras provide 360-degree situational awareness, enabling more informed and precise tactical responses.

The units are operated by commandos from the Special Tactical Unit (STU)—a specialised team trained in close-quarter combat and counter-insurgency operations. Their role will be critical during high-alert deployments, particularly in crowded or sensitive areas.

Expanding security infrastructure

Senior police officials said the new armoured vehicles represent a significant upgrade in Odisha’s security infrastructure. “They will be instrumental in patrolling, crisis response, and protection duties during major events,” said one official.

The acquisition underlines the state’s intent to modernise its approach to public safety and address evolving security threats, particularly in light of increased vulnerabilities during mass gatherings.

With the deployment of these armoured units, Odisha joins a growing list of Indian states investing in advanced law enforcement assets to meet the complex demands of contemporary security.
