In a proactive step to improve student safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved the installation of CCTV cameras in its municipal schools, starting with 80 girls’ schools in the first phase. The initiative, backed by a budget of ₹3.79 crore sanctioned by the Estimate Committee, aims to create a safer environment for students, particularly girls, amid rising concerns over their security.

The PMC currently manages around 300 schools in Pune, educating over 1.25 lakh students. These schools include those located in the city’s older areas as well as 32 newly incorporated villages. Over the years, incidents compromising the safety of girl students in schools across the state have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures, prompting this move by the municipal body.

A joint survey conducted by the PMC’s Electrical and Education Departments assessed the existing infrastructure of these schools to identify specific security requirements. The evaluation considered factors such as the number of classrooms, the layout of school buildings, open spaces, and entry points. The comprehensive survey estimated the cost of installing CCTV cameras across all 300 municipal schools at ₹17 crore.

However, given current budgetary constraints, the PMC has opted for a phased implementation of the project. In the first phase, the allocated ₹3.79 crore will be utilised to install CCTV systems in 80 girls’ schools. The remaining schools are slated for inclusion in the municipal budget for the 2024–25 financial year.

“This initiative aims to create a safer learning environment for students, particularly girls,” said Manisha Shekatkar, Head of the Electrical Department. “The approved funds will allow us to equip 80 schools with CCTV cameras in the first phase. The remaining schools will be covered in the next financial year.”

The phased approach will ensure careful allocation of resources while addressing the urgent need for enhanced security in the schools. By prioritising girls’ schools in the initial stage, the PMC hopes to provide immediate relief and assurance to students, parents, and staff alike.

The implementation of CCTV cameras is expected to improve monitoring, deter potential threats, and provide evidence in case of incidents, thereby creating a more secure environment for learning. With this initiative, the PMC takes a significant step forward in prioritising the safety and well-being of its students, laying the foundation for a more secure educational infrastructure in Pune.
