Ransomware Gang Leader Faces Sanctions, Implications For Australian Organisations

Australian officials emphasised their commitment to upholding cybersecurity standards and holding cybercriminals accountable for their actions

Law enforcement agencies in Australia, Europe, and the US have uncovered the identity of the mastermind behind the notorious ransomware gang known as LockBitSupp. Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev, a 31-year-old Russian national from Voronezh, Russia, has been identified as the leader of the group, allegedly responsible for orchestrating cybercrimes that raked in over $100 million.

LockBitSupp was notorious for its ransomware attacks, accounting for 18 per cent of reported incidents in Australia between 2022 and 2023, targeting 119 individuals and organizations in the country alone. Following a joint effort by law enforcement agencies dubbed Operation Cronos in February, which dismantled the group’s infrastructure and led to arrests and seizures, Khoroshev’s true identity was finally revealed.

In response, Australia and other countries have imposed sanctions on Khoroshev, prohibiting him from conducting any form of business within their jurisdictions. This means that companies affected by ransomware attacks could face penalties for paying ransom demands, while individuals are prohibited from providing assets to Khoroshev or engaging with him in any way.

Australian officials emphasised their commitment to upholding cybersecurity standards and holding cybercriminals accountable for their actions. Clare O’Neil, Australia’s cybersecurity minister, stressed the importance of disrupting the ransomware business model to protect citizens and businesses from cyber threats.

The revelation of Khoroshev’s identity marks a significant milestone in the fight against cybercrime, signaling a shift towards greater accountability and cooperation among international law enforcement agencies.
