India’s physical security landscape is shaped by its scale and diversity, with over 1.4 billion people, growing urban populations, and sensitive border regions, the country presents a range of challenges that demand innovative and context-aware solutions 

Physical security, once defined by iron gates, human guards, and grainy analog cameras, is undergoing a transformation. A complex mix of urban expansion, geopolitical tensions, and increasingly hybrid threats, ranging from hacked smart locks to drones used for illegal deliveries has exposed the limitations of traditional systems. Across the globe, startups are emerging as agile challengers to the status quo, introducing innovative technologies that are proactive, integrated, and more accessible. This shift towards intelligent and predictive protection can be described as the “Sentinel Paradigm”. 

This article examines the global impact of these startups, before turning to India—a dynamic space of innovation and necessity. It highlights the local adaptation of global security trends, provides illustrative case studies, and draws lessons from international models, offering a holistic picture of how startups are shaping the future of physical security. 

Sentinel Paradigm: Global Awakening 

The Sentinel Paradigm reimagines physical security as a living system—a responsive and intelligent network of connected technologies, rather than static defence mechanisms. The need for such an approach is growing. According to Allied Market Research, the global physical security market, valued at USD 104 billion in 2022, is projected to grow to USD 153 billion by 2030. Urbanisation is a key driver, with over 54 per cent of the world’s population now living in cities. Alongside this, rising crime and the blending of physical and digital threats have created the demand for smarter solutions. 

Legacy players such as Honeywell and ADT, constrained by size and bureaucracy, often struggle to pivot quickly. In contrast, startups bring flexibility and speed. Their tools include artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time threat detection, Internet of Things (IoT) for seamless device integration, biometrics for secure access control, and drones for extended reach and visibility. 

In the United States, Verkada has deployed cloud-based cameras in schools, enabling remote monitoring and instant response. Israeli startup AnyVision uses facial recognition to enhance airport security, showcasing how predictive capabilities are replacing reactive systems in critical infrastructure. These developments illustrate the global move towards the Sentinel Paradigm—an anticipatory, tech-driven approach to safety. 

Startups As Global Disruptors 

Startups across regions are reimagining how safety is delivered. In the United Kingdom, Cocoon has developed AI-based home security that learns the daily rhythms of a household and flags unusual activity. In its 2024 rollout, it reportedly led to a 25 per cent drop in break-ins in certain London suburbs. Israeli firm Percepto combines drones and sensors to secure large industrial facilities, like power plants in Tel Aviv, reducing the need for human patrols by up to 60 per cent. 

In the United States, Deep Sentinel merges AI surveillance with live human monitoring. Its pilot project in San Francisco in 2025 resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in retail theft, thanks to its ability to intervene via audio in real-time. These examples illustrate a core strength of startups: the ability to scale quickly and offer cost-effective, modular services. 

Unlike traditional systems that require significant capital expenditure—for instance, a USD 1 million investment for a conventional CCTV setup—many startups offer subscription-based pricing. Verkada’s package at USD 199 per month includes hardware and software updates, making it viable for small and medium businesses. In Kenya, Ushahidi’s crowdsourced security technology has scaled from individual market stalls to entire municipal networks. These adaptable and scalable solutions are universally valuable, but India offers a distinctive context shaped by demographic, geographic, and infrastructural realities. 

India:  Security Crucible 

India’s physical security landscape is shaped by its scale and diversity. With over 1.4 billion people, growing urban populations, and sensitive border regions, the country presents a range of challenges that demand innovative and context-aware solutions. By 2030, an estimated 600 million Indians will reside in urban areas, placing further strain on already-stretched infrastructure. At the same time, areas such as Jammu & Kashmir require high vigilance due to cross-border infiltration threats. 

The Indian physical security market is expanding at an annual growth rate of 10.5 per cent, driven by demand from both public and private sectors. Indian startups are responding not just by importing technology, but by creating tailor-made solutions suited to local conditions—solutions that are affordable, durable, and work effectively across rural and urban divides. 

Startups in India are deploying a broad range of technologies. Staqu Technologies, for instance, has developed JARVIS, an AI-powered system that turns regular CCTV cameras into intelligent surveillance units. Its implementation in Lucknow in 2024 helped reduce response times by 30 per cent. In the realm of access control, Latch provides smart locks that are being used in Gurugram offices, allowing remote locking and unlocking capabilities. 

Biometrics, already central to India’s identity landscape through the Aadhaar programme, are being extended into secure access systems. In areas affected by insurgency, like Chhattisgarh, ideaForge’s drones are used to conduct surveillance missions in dense forests, logging more than six lakh operations by 2025. These examples reflect a coordinated, multi-technology approach aligned with the Sentinel Paradigm, where AI, drones, and biometrics work in tandem. 

Case Studies: Indian Startups In Action 

Staqu Technologies, headquartered in Bengaluru, has deployed its JARVIS platform across several Indian smart cities. In 2024, it successfully identified a wanted fugitive at Kanpur Railway Station using facial recognition capabilities. Its growing footprint—now covering more than 10 cities—demonstrates the scalability of AI-led video analytics in the Indian context. 

Mumbai-based ideaForge is known for developing SWITCH UAVs, which are now used by the Indian Army in Gadchiroli. The drones are equipped with AI tracking and, following a 2025 upgrade, thermal imaging for night operations. This reduces the risk to human personnel in difficult terrains. 

A fictional but plausible example is Safeguard Dynamics, imagined as a startup launched in 2023 by former ISRO scientists and ex-Army officers. Their product, OmniSentinel, integrates AI-powered cameras, smart locks, and compact drones into a service priced at INR 2,400 per month. In a 2025 pilot at a warehouse in Patli, it helped prevent a smuggling operation through real-time monitoring and automated lock-down mechanisms. By 2026, such systems could be protecting rural health clinics across Punjab. 

Garuda Aerospace, a real startup from Chennai, originally focused on agricultural drones. However, in 2025, it pivoted to crowd monitoring, using thermal UAVs during the Kumbh Mela. Priced at USD 500 per unit and backed by government subsidies, these drones offer a cost-effective method for public safety at large gatherings. 

International Inspiration: Lessons For India 

Indian startups are also drawing on international practices for inspiration. Deep Sentinel’s fusion of AI surveillance and human intervention is conceptually similar to Staqu’s efforts in Indian cities, indicating the potential for hybrid security models in high-density areas. 

Israel’s Percepto, with its drone-sensor solutions for industrial security, mirrors ideaForge’s deployments in India’s remote regions. This highlights opportunities to secure India’s 63 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with similar integrated technologies. 

Cocoon’s behavioural learning for home security could be adapted by startups like Safeguard for Indian urban households, where theft increased by 12 per cent in 2024. These shared strategies reflect a common focus on integration, affordability, and predictiveness—values that align with India’s security and economic needs. 

Challenges To Adoption 

Despite the innovation, challenges remain. Globally, new entrants must build trust—established players like ADT benefit from long-term reputations. Regulations also vary: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, drone regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rules in India can all slow deployment. 

In India, additional barriers persist. Unstable electricity supplies in rural areas hinder the use of IoT systems, while evolving privacy laws pose compliance issues for AI-powered systems like JARVIS. The fictional Safeguard startup addresses this by using solar-powered devices—a potential solution real companies might consider. Moreover, the presence of global giants such as Honeywell entering the Indian market intensifies competition. However, Indian startups retain an edge through speed, localisation, and cost-effectiveness. 

Funding also remains limited. Before 2020, Indian security startups raised just USD 16.56 million in total. Although there are signs of growth; Garuda secured USD 3 million in 2025—more capital is required to support scaling efforts. 

Impact Of Sentinel Paradigm 

Startups are not just delivering new technology; they are changing the role of security from reactive to proactive. Globally, companies like Percepto detect threats before they materialise, and Deep Sentinel intervenes during crimes in progress. In India, Staqu helps pre-empt incidents, while Safeguard (fictionally) ensures round-the-clock protection in rural areas. 

The economic impact is also significant. According to Inc42, security tech in India could generate over five lakh jobs by 2030. Socially, the affordability of solutions such as a USD 50 OmniSentinel kit has the potential to safeguard schools in low-income regions, reducing safety disparities. 

Risks are present. In 2024, JARVIS experienced a misidentification incident, highlighting the broader issue of bias in AI systems. Moreover, vulnerabilities in IoT and drone systems raise cybersecurity concerns. Safeguard’s fictional reliance on strong encryption offers one approach to mitigating these threats, pointing to the need for secure design in future products. 

Sentinel Future 

The Sentinel Paradigm is more than a conceptual model—it is shaping real-world outcomes. In global scenarios, it could enable AI to forecast civil unrest in cities like Paris or deploy drones to monitor vulnerable areas in Rio de Janeiro. In India, Staqu might one day analyse social media chatter to forecast tensions in Delhi, while Safeguard’s OmniSentinel could provide flood-affected communities in Assam with autonomous security. 

Biometric systems could integrate more deeply with Aadhaar for port and border security, and smart city initiatives could interlink multiple urban zones into a coordinated network of sensors and cameras. This creates not just a safer society, but a smarter, more responsive one. 

Startups are at the forefront of this shift. Whether it is Verkada monitoring schools in the United States, or ideaForge flying missions in India’s forests, the future of physical security is being shaped not by walls, but by webs—networks of intelligent systems, stitched together by innovation, and made resilient through adaptability. 

In India, where the stakes are high and the landscape is complex, the heartbeat of the Sentinel Paradigm is strong. Startups, driven by necessity and enabled by technology, are reshaping what safety means for the 21st century.
