Once the network is fully operational across all villages in the Thane rural district, authorities plan to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to enhance data analysis
The rural police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have introduced a CCTV surveillance initiative aimed at strengthening security and improving real-time monitoring of public spaces. The initiative, titled ‘Ek CCTV Aplya Surakshesathi’ (One CCTV for Our Security), is expected to aid in crime prevention, traffic management, and overall law enforcement.
Special Inspector General (IG) of Police, Konkan Region, Sanjay Darade, inaugurated the project, highlighting the significance of surveillance technology in enhancing public safety. He emphasised that such systems play a crucial role in detecting crimes, tracking offenders, and managing traffic effectively.
A dedicated team of trained personnel has been assigned to the central control room, where they will monitor live footage from the CCTV network. Officials explained that the system is designed to help identify potential threats, such as chain-snatching incidents, suspicious activities, and criminal escape routes.
Currently, 10 monitors have been installed at the central control room, providing access to real-time feeds from 1,121 cameras spread across the district. The initiative is still expanding, with plans to integrate more cameras in the coming months to ensure wider coverage.
Once the network is fully operational across all villages in the Thane rural district, authorities plan to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to enhance data analysis. “In the future, AI will play a vital role in analysing surveillance data. We plan to develop tools that will allow us to track habitual offenders and suspected criminals by uploading their images into the system,” an official said.
The move aligns with broader efforts to leverage technology in law enforcement, ensuring a more proactive approach to crime prevention and public security. Officials believe that an extensive CCTV network, coupled with AI-based monitoring, will significantly improve their ability to respond swiftly to incidents and deter criminal activities.
