Union Home Minister Reviews Security In J&K, Stresses “Zero Infiltration” Goal

Enhanced coordination among various security agencies has reportedly contributed to better intelligence sharing in recent weeks

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security audit conducted by security forces along the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Emphasising the need to strengthen anti-terror operations, he urged the forces to work towards achieving “zero infiltration” from across the border.

A senior official said, “The Home Minister directed all security agencies to step up the fight against terrorism by aiming for the zero infiltration goal.”

Enhanced coordination among various security agencies has reportedly contributed to better intelligence sharing in recent weeks. Following Mr Shah’s directive for improved information-sharing mechanisms, security forces on the ground have successfully thwarted two infiltration attempts in the past month.

In one such incident, two heavily armed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were intercepted and killed by the army in Poonch district last week.

Security Audit Findings & Action

The security review comes after an alarming rise in infiltration attempts last year, with the Jammu sector witnessing increased activity compared to the Kashmir Valley. This prompted a comprehensive security audit along the border, leading to the plugging of loopholes and the restrategising of deployments.

Addressing the security grid, Mr Shah highlighted the role of the narcotics network in funding terrorist activities. He called for swift action to disrupt terror financing, particularly from drug trafficking operations.

Strengthening Forensic Support

In a move to bolster the justice system, the Home Minister directed officials to expedite appointments at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to ensure the effective implementation of new criminal laws.

Tackling OGW Network Post Kulgam Attack

The security review follows a deadly terrorist attack in Kulgam, south Kashmir, where former soldier Manzoor Ahmad Wagay was killed, and his wife and niece were injured.

Calling for a “ruthless approach” to dismantle the Over Ground Worker (OGW) network supporting terror operations, Mr Shah urged forces to intensify their crackdown. In response, the state police have launched a large-scale operation in the Valley, detaining multiple suspects. The state intelligence agency also carried out raids in the Noorbagh area.

The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, DGP Nalin Prabhat, and army chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

Authorities are hopeful that the measures discussed during the meeting will significantly improve the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir while ensuring greater vigilance along the borders.
