Security guards are more than just watchmen—they are society’s silent sentinels.

Indias security guards form a key part of the countrys safety framework. Deployed across residential societies, offices, banks, malls, and transport hubs, they manage daily protection duties. Despite this, their work is often undervalued and goes without recognition.

Long Hours, Low Pay, and Little Relief

The role involves long hours, limited rest, and exposure to extreme weather. Wages remain low in many cases, regardless of the growing responsibilities guards must shoulder.

Syed Imtiaz Haider, a guard at Checkmate Security Pvt Ltd, earns Rs 9,000 a month. I tolerate heat, cold and rain. I continue working to support my family. Our struggles go unnoticed,he says.

Vigilance That Saves Lives

Acts of initiative and quick response are often part of a guards routine. Khushi Ram once stopped a car thief at a residential complex. Narendra Pandey, of Tops Security Ltd, prevented a child from being hit by a speeding car.

Respect Remains Elusive

Security guards often face verbal abuse, disrespect, and indifference. Abdul Ghafoor, a supervisor at Peregrine Guarding, describes a visitor turning aggressive when refused entry.[Text Wrapping Break]Such incidents are common. We deal with them with no support,he says.

A Job Thats Evolving With Technology

The role now includes operating AI-based surveillance systems, biometric access tools, and digital monitoring platforms. Guards are expected to be familiar with technology and alert to emerging risks.

Training initiatives by companies such as SIS India Ltd aim to develop both physical and digital skills in guards.

Earlier it was just patrols. Now we manage alerts, scanners, and surveillance systems.[Text Wrapping Break]Rajesh Kumar, G4S Secure Solutions India

The Need for Policy Support

Despite being one of Indias largest employment sectors—around eight million strong—security guards are largely outside the protection of formal labour laws. Most lack benefits such as pensions, medical insurance, and regulated hours.

Suresh Mishra of the Private Security Industry Regulation Committee calls for clear policy: It is time to introduce structured policies that train them well and provide financial security.

Recognition and Reform Must Follow

Security guards are present across all sectors, contributing to everyday safety. While some agencies lead improvements, the sector still lacks a unified approach to wages, training, and welfare.

Recognition of their role, improved regulation, and better working conditions are needed to build a motivated and stable workforce.
