In a proactive step towards enhancing campus safety, Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) in Prayagraj conducted a comprehensive fire safety and rescue drill in association with the 101 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Shantipuram, Phaphamau. The initiative, held on campus, aimed to train university staff and security personnel in managing real-time fire emergencies and providing immediate medical assistance in crisis situations.

The drill simulated various emergency scenarios, offering participants hands-on experience in fire extinguishing techniques, rescuing trapped individuals, and administering primary care to burn victims. The RAF, known for its expertise in disaster response, led the session and ensured participants were equipped with practical knowledge that could prove life-saving during unforeseen incidents.

A highlight of the drill was the demonstration of a modern fireball extinguisher—an innovative tool that automatically activates upon contact with flames, bursting and absorbing surrounding oxygen to suppress the fire. The device, praised for its ease of use and rapid action, does not require any technical training, making it particularly suitable for institutions and public spaces. RAF Commandant Manoj Kumar Gautam underscored the efficiency of the fireball, suggesting its wider deployment across educational campuses.

UPRTOU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Satyakam reiterated the university’s commitment to safety, affirming that regular drills will continue to take place in compliance with Raj Bhavan’s directives. He emphasised that preparedness is not a one-time measure but an ongoing responsibility. “Regular training is crucial for protecting both lives and infrastructure during emergencies,” he said.

The initiative reflects a growing awareness in Indian academic institutions of the importance of disaster preparedness. With fire incidents increasingly posing risks to densely populated public buildings, UPRTOU’s initiative sets a precedent for integrating safety training as a routine aspect of institutional management.
