Microsoft had recently cut access to Outlook, Teams, and cloud services for Nayara Energy for compliance with EU sanctions on Russian-aligned entities. Although Microsoft restored access to its data and services for Nayara Energy days after the company disclosed a sudden disruption, the disruption highlighted growing threats of Indian dependence on foreign software and cloud infrastructure.
Over 80 per cent of Indian data is housed or processed on foreign cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. We must overhaul this over-reliance as a nation. The Nayara event should not be an exception; it’s a glimpse of what can go wrong when your digital backbone is in the hands of those beyond our shores.
Indigenous Cloud: Can Indian Players Rise
In the wake of the Nayara incident, attention is now centered on India’s domestic cloud and data center ecosystem. Several indigenous players are building scalable and secure solutions. We spoke to an Indian cloud services provider, Mr. Manoj, CTO and co-founder of Utho Cloud, a rapidly rising Indian cloud infrastructure player.
“We consider Microsoft-Nayara to be a national wake-up call,” said Mr. Manoj Dhanda.
Nayara Energy is an Indian firm, but its operations were disrupted by a foreign service provider, as per foreign legislation in the backdrop of EU sanctions against Russian-aligned companies. “This episode exposed the weakness of our vital digital infrastructure, which is not actually in Indian hands.” He also said, “Although services resumed a week later due to pressure from courts and the public, the outage showed just how quickly Indian corporations can be affected suddenly, without any redress. It’s a chilling sign that foreign platforms can call the shots in our own backyard.”
Sovereignty vs Sanctions: A Risky Bargain
“Over 80 per cent of Indian data resides on foreign hyperscale cloud platforms. Foreign laws like the US CLOUD Act or sanctions from the EU can even override Indian law, interests, and even contracts. Data may be physically resident in India, but control mechanisms are still out of India’s jurisdiction,” Mr. Manoj emphasized.
This growing concern for data sovereignty is especially crucial for businesses such as banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI), where downtime and data sensitivity are simply unacceptable in trade. Such a failure as experienced by Nayara could potentially shut down operations to a grinding halt, damage consumer confidence, and invite ginormous regulatory retaliation. “Healthcare providers with cloud-based electronic health records might also be similarly vulnerable,” he warned.
Economic Consequences & Emergence of Homegrown Fixes
Logistics and supply chain sectors, which rely heavily on cloud-based, real-time coordination, can suffer from humongous economic losses because of a couple of hours of disruption. Government services and technology startups, the keystones of India’s digital public infrastructure and innovation economy, are just as vulnerable. “This is no scaremongering. This is a wake-up call; India must take strategic steps to reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure and assume digital command over its destiny,” stated Mr. Manoj.
“Don’t panic, but act.” It’s more than compliance. It is digital sovereignty, economic resilience, and national security. Indian cloud companies are rising to the challenge now. Their cloud infrastructure is built in India from scratch, governed by Indian legislation, and tailored to sector-specific regulatory needs. “We are already in a virtual war not fought with missiles but with server downtime, suspended licenses, and policy adherence imposed from the outside,” stated Mr. Manoj the founder of a cloud based company “Utho”. .
India must make conscious, calculated investments in creating a domestically driven digital ecosystem where ownership, access, and control of data remain within Indian firms and institutions. While foreign associations may still have their role to play, homegrown cloud infrastructure must be the basis of India’s digital future.
