Kenya’s PSRA Prohibits Deductions Of COTU Dues From Private Security Guards’ Payrolls

The directive follows complaints from security guards regarding the utilisation of their contributions and COTU’s failure to address their welfare concerns. PSRA has launched an investigation into COTU’s management of security guards’ contributions, which is estimated to total billions of shillings

The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) has issued a directive instructing all private security firms to halt the deduction and remittance of security guards’ monthly trade union fee contributions to the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU).

PSRA highlighted concerns over the efficacy of COTU in representing the rights and welfare of private security guards. The PSRA CEO, Fazul Mahamed, emphasized that despite the modest wages of security guards, they have faithfully contributed monthly fees to COTU. However, PSRA noted a lack of tangible representation and advocacy for their interests from COTU.

“Private security officers constitute a significant portion of COTU’s membership and have consistently contributed trade union fees. Unfortunately, COTU has not adequately represented their rights or advocated for compliance with minimum wage regulations,” stated Mahamed.
