Delhi Airport To Enhance Security With Full-Body Scanners By May 2024
The Delhi airport, as the largest airport in the country with an estimated passenger traffic exceeding 70 million in the current fiscal year ending March 2024, is at the forefront of implementing these cutting-edge security measures

Delhi airport is set to enhance its security measures with the installation of full-body scanners and Computed Tomography X-ray (CTX) machines by May 2024, according to a senior official from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This move is part of BCAS’s ongoing initiative to incorporate advanced security technologies at key airports across India.

The introduction of full-body scanners represents a significant leap forward in passenger screening, providing a more thorough approach to security checks. BCAS Director General Zulfiquar Hasan disclosed on Friday that the installation deadline for these scanners and CTX machines is extended to address provisioning issues, with ongoing discussions with airport operators. The revised deadline reflects the commitment to a phased deployment of these advanced security technologies, now expected by May 2024 instead of the initial December 31 deadline.

The Delhi airport, being the largest in the country with an estimated passenger traffic exceeding 70 million in the current fiscal year, is leading the implementation of these cutting-edge security measures.

CTX machines utilise Computer Tomography X-ray technology, enabling passengers to keep electronic devices in their hand baggage during security checks. This eliminates the need to separately remove and place electronic items in trays, streamlining the security check-in process.

BCAS plans to deploy full-body scanners gradually, with the installation of scanners based on computer tomography technology providing a two-dimensional view of objects inside hand baggage. This enhances security and accelerates the security check-in process, contributing to a more efficient and passenger-friendly experience.

The phased implementation of these advanced security measures aligns with India’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of air travellers in the rapidly growing civil aviation market. With over 13.82 crore passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-November 2023, the adoption of full-body scanners and CTX machines reflects India’s stride in aligning with global aviation standards and improving the overall travel experience.
