City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal emphasised the importance of tightening security outside the airport to mitigate potential risks
In response to an alarming email threat received at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), airport authorities initiated rigorous security checks and measures. The email, originating from a sender claiming to be a part of the ‘Funing’ terrorist group, asserted the presence of explosives onboard an aircraft and within the airport premises. This ominous message, sent by ‘xonocikonoci10@beeble.com,’ was not exclusive to Mangaluru, as multiple airports across the country reported receiving similar threats on the same night.
The email, received at 11.20 am on a Wednesday, detailed a chilling scenario wherein hidden explosives were set to detonate within a few hours. The swift response from MIA involved alerting city police, who, in collaboration with airport authorities, conducted an extensive search and implemented heightened security protocols. These measures included the establishment of additional check posts and thorough checks by the bomb detection and disposal squad.
City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal emphasised the importance of tightening security outside the airport to mitigate potential risks. In light of the situation, a meeting between the Bajpe police inspector and airport authorities resulted in the filing of a case. The Bajpe police registered the case under Section 507 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), based on a complaint lodged by the Adani airport authorities.
This incident underscores the critical need for coordinated efforts to address security threats promptly and efficiently. By swiftly responding to the threat and initiating thorough security measures, Mangaluru Airport exemplifies a commitment to public safety and resilience in the face of potential security risks. The collaboration between law enforcement and airport authorities showcases a proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of passengers and maintaining the integrity of airport operations. As airports play a pivotal role in national infrastructure, incidents like these highlight the ongoing challenges in safeguarding public spaces and the necessity for robust security measures.
