While specific details regarding the number of passengers onboard and any potential injuries sustained during the hard landing are yet to be ascertained, Air India has initiated its own internal investigation into the matter, in compliance with DGCA norms
In a recent aviation incident that occurred last month, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into a hard landing involving an Air India A320 Neo aircraft in Dubai. Officials announced on Monday that the airline has taken immediate action by derostering the pilot pending the outcome of the investigation.
The incident took place on December 20 when the A320 Neo, operating a flight from Kochi to Dubai, experienced a hard landing. The aircraft, post the incident, remained grounded in Dubai for nearly a week, undergoing essential maintenance checks. A senior DGCA official confirmed that the DGCA is actively looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the aircraft eventually returning to Mumbai on December 27.
While specific details regarding the number of passengers onboard and any potential injuries sustained during the hard landing are yet to be ascertained, Air India has initiated its own internal investigation into the matter, in compliance with DGCA norms.
An Air India spokesperson reassured the public that the pilot involved in the incident was appropriately trained and licensed to operate the A320 Neo. However, following standard procedures, the pilot has been derostered pending the completion of the inquiry.
Insiders familiar with the situation disclosed that the A320 Neo aircraft, registered as VT-CIQ, underwent comprehensive maintenance checks in Dubai due to the severity of the hard landing. In aviation terminology, a hard landing is defined in terms of ‘touch down g,’ and this incident experienced a notable “3.5 g arrival landing,” necessitating extended maintenance checks.
Aviation analyst Shakti Lumba brought attention to the gravity of the situation, noting that passengers on the flight refused to deplane until the Captain issued an apology. Lumba also raised concerns about the limited media coverage of the incident and questioned the awareness of the DGCA regarding the matter.
This incident highlights the significance of thorough investigations and the adherence to safety protocols within the aviation industry. As the DGCA delves into the specifics of the case, it serves as a stark reminder of the continuous efforts required to ensure the safety, security, and transparency of air travel.
