Reliance Jio Infocomm, a prominent telecom operator in India, is gearing up to launch a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay — the ‘Bharat GPT’ program. The announcement came from Akash Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Jio, who shared that this program aims to harness the capabilities of large language models and generative artificial intelligence (GPT) to bring about transformative changes across various sectors in the country.
The Bharat GPT initiative is part of Jio’s broader vision, known as “Jio 2.0,” which revolves around building a comprehensive development ecosystem. The partnership with IIT Bombay, dating back to 2014, seeks to explore the vast potential of artificial intelligence in driving innovation across a spectrum of products and services. Akash Ambani emphasised the significant impact of artificial intelligence, predicting that the next decade will witness a defining moment with applications utilising large language models and generative AI. He stressed the ongoing efforts to integrate AI not only as a standalone vertical within the organisation but also horizontally across all sectors.
In addition to the Bharat GPT program, Ambani disclosed that Reliance Jio is actively working on developing its own operating system (OS) tailored for televisions. The envisioned OS aims to elevate the user experience on Jio’s devices and contribute to the overall ecosystem of services offered by the company.
Ambani affirmed the company’s commitment to introducing new products and services across diverse domains such as media, commerce, communication, and devices. He shared that comprehensive plans are in motion for the launch of Jio’s television operating system, underscoring the diligent efforts invested in its development.
Highlighting the significance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future, Akash Ambani emphasised that AI is poised to permeate every aspect of products and services. He elaborated on Jio’s focus on creating a 5G stack specifically designed for private networks, catering to enterprises of all sizes. Ambani reiterated Jio’s dedication to spearheading technological advancements in India.
In his address, Ambani described India as the “biggest innovation centre” for the next decade, expressing confidence in the country’s potential to achieve a USD 6 trillion economy by the end of the decade. He emphasised the inclusive nature of artificial intelligence, referring to it not just as artificial intelligence but as “all included.”
