To ensure passenger safety, Central Railway has recently unveiled plans for substantial security upgrades across its expansive network. The announcement was made by the newly-appointed General Manager, Ram Karan Yadav, during his first news conference since taking the helm.
Yadav briefed the comprehensive security features, with the focus point being the installation of panic switches at a staggering 117 railway stations. This strategic initiative is poised to bolster the safety of millions of travellers who rely on the extensive railway network. Each platform at the specified stations is slated to be equipped with not just one, but two panic switches. These specialised devices will empower passengers to instantly alert the Railway Protection Force (RPF) during emergencies, ensuring a rapid and efficient response to any unforeseen circumstances.

This cooperative effort is set to bring integration of the panic switch system with the existing CCTV network. When a passenger activates the panic button, the RPF control room will receive an immediate alert. Subsequently, officers can swiftly assess the situation through the available CCTV footage, enabling them to provide prompt aid and assistance. This innovative safety measure is anticipated to be fully operational within a year, showcasing a commitment to enhancing the security infrastructure of one of India’s busiest railway networks.
In a noteworthy commitment to passenger welfare, especially for female commuters, Yadav announced that by March 2024, all ladies’ coaches on Mumbai’s local trains will be equipped with an emergency talkback system and CCTV cameras. Among the 771 ladies’ coaches currently in service, an impressive 512 already feature the talkback system, and 421 coaches have been fitted with CCTV. These enhancements are poised to provide women with an additional layer of security, offering them the means to communicate directly with train officials in case of any distressing situations. This comprehensive and forward-looking approach underscores Central Railway’s unwavering dedication to passenger safety and overall well-being.
